‘Hoaxmap’ hits back at newspaper myths about refugees

A Twitter user named only as ‘Karolin’ is creating a ‘hoaxmap’ of inaccurate reports about refugees and asylum seekers being involved in crimes such as rape and shoplifting. A hoax is a deliberately misleading or false news report, created and placed in order to suit a particular political viewpoint. Poland’s ruling party sues opposition newspaper Gazeta wyborcza

by Beata WalczakiewiczGazeta Wyborcka, Poland’s leading left-liberal newspaper, faces a libel action from the government’s ruling party over its commentary on the controversial pardon of a state official who was convicted of abuse of power. The International Press Institute, based in Vienna, has issued a press statement condemning the move. IPI, with the European Federation of Journalists and the ECPMF, recently visited Poland on a fact finding mission, provoked by the new PiS media law reforms. The Venice Commission of the Council of Europe has also visited to investigate constitutional changes and will report its findings on 11th March. Poland…

Women’s Day: ECPMF launches Alarm Centre for Female Journalists under Threat

Faced with growing evidence that more and more women journalists are menaced with gender-based violence and online threats, ECPMF has created a special Women’s Reporting Point to respond to this. It will be officially launched on 8 March 2016, the date that marks the International Women’s Day. Threats can be reported via encrypted messaging. The secure emails will only be opened by female staff at ECPMF headquarters and their contents will remain confidential. For the Women’s Reporting Point, ECPMF is partnering with the European Federation of Journalists EFJ and its Italian branch FNSI to provide appropriate legal assistance and solidarity…

Turkey: independent TV shut down as Cumhuriyet editors released

Turkish journalists Erdem Gül and Can Dündar have been released from jail. The editors from the opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet had been arrested 3 months earlier accused of spying and intentionally revealing state secrets after they alleged that the Erdogan-government tried to ship arms to Syria to support of Islamist fighters. On the day of Gül’s and Dündar’s release, independent Turkish broadcaster IMC was stopped from broadcasting for a day. The TV channel was accused of spreading “terrorist propaganda” and shut down by the government to investigate the allegations. The break in transmission came while IMC was airing a live interview…

UK: Libel case "not worth the candle" as banker had already settled case in Portugal

Katrin Welker The High Court of Justice of England and Wales decided on the 22 January 2016 (Case No: TLJ/15/0654) that there is no need to continue proceedings for defamation if the reputation of the claimant was effectively restored. An international banker filed a criminal libel claim against a journalist and a photographer as well as the media company they work for. The media company is situated in Portugal and publishes a weekly newspaper printed in Portugal and also owns and maintains websites. Finnish editors speak out against defamatory fake media

On first of March, the statement was released all over Finland in the name of "media we can trust", including the most important newspapers and broadcasters like YLE, Helsingin Sanomat and Hufvudstadsbladet.
