“Defamed whistleblowers need protection” – UN Geneva expert

Court rules online news sites are not liable for offensive readers’ comments

Hate speech and inciting violence are illegal, insults and vulgar remarks are not. The ECtHR recently decided that a self-regulatory body (Magyar Tartalomszolgáltatók Egyesülete, MTE) and an Internet news portal (Index.hu Zrt) were not liable for the offensive comments posted by their readers on their respective websites. Warren Richardson winns World Press Photo of the Year Award

The photographer at the centre of ECPMF’s fact-finding mission to Hungary has won the prestigious World Press Photo of the Year Award. Richardson, an Australian journalist, was one of several media workers who were beaten and detained by Hungarian police at the Rozges border crossing between Serbia and Hungary in September 2015. His winning picture shows a baby being passed through the razor-wire fence at the border by refugees.
