Free expression groups call on Arron Banks to drop SLAPP lawsuit against Carole Cadwalladr

  We, the undersigned organisations, welcome today’s judgment on meaning in the case of Arron Banks vs Carole Cadwalladr. The judgment clarified the context of the comments that form the basis of this lawsuit, and noted that aspects of the claimant’s argument were “far-fetched and divorced from the specific context in which those words were used”. We consider this case to be an example of a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP), as it is vexatious in nature and intended to silence Cadwalladr’s courageous investigative journalism. We call on Banks to drop this abusive lawsuit and cease efforts to stifle public…

ECPMF and OSCE in Slovakia for solidarity and justice for Jàn and Martina

Identifying best practices for journalism and press freedom

The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa (OBCT) are conducting a Fact-Finding Mission to Denmark and Sweden. This is to identify best practices and recommendations for journalism and press freedom. For three days, from 16 – 18 December 2019, the delegation will meet with journalists, politicians, scientists and representatives of media organisations.  Both countries have long traditions of constitutionally protected press freedom, a high organisational degree of journalists, press subsidies and level of trust in the media, and a relatively strong local press. European leaders must hold Muscat to account for political interference in Daphne Caruana Galizia murder investigation   11 December 2019 We, the undersigned organisations, urge European Union leaders to call on Prime Minister Muscat to guarantee that all investigations and legal proceedings related to the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder are conducted efficiently, transparently and without any interference from any individual potentially implicated in the case. Heads of State of EU countries will gather in Brussels tomorrow, 12 December, for the meeting of the European Council. Recent developments in the investigation have shown that Prime Minister Muscat is inextricably linked to several suspects in the case.…
