ECPMF conference puts press freedom on the map

They came from twenty three countries to the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom’s base in Leipzig, East Germany … top politicians such as Elmar Brok, the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs spokesman, leading lawyers such as Russia’s Galina Arapova, campaigners like Melody Patry from Index on Censorship, top managers like Hans-Ulrich Jörges, editor-in-chief for Special Affaires, Gruner + Jahr, Hamburg, and leading academics including Professor Dirk Voorhoof from Ghent University.

South East Europe Media Forum

SEEMF is the biggest media conference in South Eastern Europe, bringing journalists, media experts and politicians together. It is organised by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, in partnership with the South East Europe Media Organization and the Central European Initiative.

In 2015, SEEMF took place in Bucharest.

The Cost of Freedom of Expression

In 2014, UNESCO launched an Infographic Competition on the topic Raising Awareness to End Impunity.This was the entry selected as the best one to represent challenges and consequences of attacks against journalists and impunity.

The infographic presents data referring to the period 2006-2013, providing detailed information about the number of journalists killed, their professional position, gender and type of media for which they were working.

Europe’s journalists subjected to increasing levels of harassment

Index on Censorship provides an overview of the violations of media freedom recorded through the project Mapping Media Freedom. Between 1 May and 30 September 2015, 285 violations of media freedom in Europe have been recorded and verified. More than a third of the incidents – 108 cases – included harassment against journalists
