today is a special day, a symbolic day – in the middle of the elections for a new European Parliament (#Ivote4PressFreedom!), we celebrate the tenth anniversary of a document that is the ECPMF's guiding star: the European Charter on Freedom of the Press.

48 leading journalists from all over Europe adopted and signed the document on 25 May 2009. Two weeks later Uli Jörges, initiator of the Charter, handed it over to EU-Commissioner Vivianne Reding. By now, the Charter is translated in several European languages. You can read the full story and see some pictures of the decisive…

The recent extradition of the Football Leaks whistleblower, who unearthed pivotal revelations of public interest, offers a unique opportunity for the European judicial system. To effectively fight corruption, the European Union must protect its whistleblowers.
On April 16, the European Parliament voted to adopt an historic agreement on whistleblower protection with a directive to protect citizens that reveal breaches of public trust and abuses of power due to come into force later this year. It is the first time a uniform law has been passed that applies to employees, non-employees, former employees, the self-employed and also their families. It…

The government collapsed as the centre-right Austrian People’s Party ended their ruling coalition with the Freedom Party, thus triggering a snap election. The fact that this happened just over a week before the European Parliament elections…
