ECPMF's Advocacy Officer Nora Wehofsits travelled to Turkey to monitor the final hearings of the Cumhuriyet trial. 18 defendants were sentenced to up to eight years in jail - because of their journalistic activities.

ECPMF on 2018 World Press Freedom Index: state of emergency in Europe
The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, is warning against the dismantlement of freedom rights and the increasing threat against journalists in the EU.
"Demagogues and autocrats are fighting the free press because they cannot stand democratic control. Under a corrupt administration the work of an investigative journalist is life-threatening," says Lutz Kinkel, ECPMF's managing director. "We have to defend ourselves with all our might to protect journalists. Otherwise the EU will lose its democratic substance."
The ECPMF was founded in 2015 to publicise violations of the European Charter on Freedom…

On 24 April 2018 start the supposedly final hearings in the trial against Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet at Silivri prison, outside Istanbul. 18 defendants are threatened with charges of up to 43 years. ECPMF's Nora Wehofsits is on-site monitoring the trial.

From 24 to 27 April, 2018 eighteen journalists and executives of Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet are standing trial again in Silivri Prison.
