UK: BBC successfully defends itself against libel claims of an imam

by Ingo Beckendorf The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the public service broadcaster in the United Kingdom, has won a libel lawsuit against an imam from London. The imam, who is the leader of an Islamic Center in the urban district of Lewisham in London, brought a libel action against the BBC due to comments made by a BBC reporter during a live interview in 2013. The BBC's Sunday Politics programme included a feature on whether mosques were doing enough to counter extremism, including an interview between a BBC reporter and the imam. The Balkans lead the way in Freedom of Information

Rodoljub Sabic (photo:privat) This is the result of a benchmarking study on freedom of information laws (FoIA) in 95 countries done by the Centre for Law and Democracy in Canada. No country gets the maximum of 150 points, but in the top ten you will find Serbia with 135, Slovenia with 129, Albania with 127 and Croatia with 126. Balkans in the lead in access to public information

Citizens in several Balkan countries have better access to public information than Germans, Danes and Austrians. The new Danish government has promised to improve the law about access to public information. There is certainly room for improvement, as Denmark in an international benchmarking is far behind the leading countries. According to an analysis from the Canadian Centre for Law and Democracy we find Serbia, Slovenia, Albania and Croatia in the top ten, whereas both Austria and Germany is in the bottom ten of the 95 countries where you have a law on access to public information.
