Global Muckraking - 100 Years of Investigative Journalism from Around the World

Edited by Anya Schiffrin, director of the media and communications program at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, and published by The New Press , Global Muckraking collects stories of investigative journalism highlighting how the commitment to reveal otherwise untold stories has helped changing the world.

The volume includes stories that cover the last 100 years and every continent. Divided into thematic sections, the book provides a comprehensive perspective on 20^th century investigative reporting which has contributed to uncover stories of injustice and abuse. The volume is divided into thematic sections, according to the topic of investigation. The different thematic chapters are curated by prominent journalists with extensive expertise and include stories about labour abuse from El Salvador to India; the anti-colonialist struggle; corruption (including a contribution by the journalist Khadija Ismayilova, currently detained by the Azeri regime); oil and mining; environmental issues, and gender issues.

Local issues are examined by putting them in their global context; at the same time, the book aptly manages to grasp the influence of global dynamics on domestic contexts. By carefully examining the elements contributing to the success of the stories considered, the volume offers an exhaustive anthology of ingredients that help making exposés effective.
