The Manual for the Safety of Journalists in Albania is a practical resource designed to help journalists and newsrooms enhance safety practices, particularly in high-risk situations. Developed by Free Press Unlimited with input from SCiDEV, it responds to challenges identified through the project “Strengthening Journalistic Safety through Engaged Stakeholder Collaboration and Journalists’ Capacity Development in Albania.” The manual is structured around the three “P’s”: prevention, protection, and prosecution. It provides guidance on preparing journalists for physical and digital threats, managing incidents, and supporting legal action against attacks, including online harassment and threats. Special attention is given to protecting women and young journalists, who are disproportionately affected by harassment, intimidation, and abuse. Chapters also address office security, psychological support, legal risks, and international standards. By offering practical tools and protocols, the manual helps newsrooms strengthen both personal safety and institutional safeguards, enabling journalists to work effectively while maintaining press freedom in Albania’s increasingly challenging media environment.
