NewsGuard is a browser extension that displays a rating icon on news websites indicating their trustworthiness. The icon can be green or red based on credibility and transparency. It is assigned by a team of trained journalists based on nine journalists criteria. They detail which criteria are fulfilled and which are not.
They also write a longer "nutrition label", describing the website’s background, ownership, and why they get a certain rating. Satire websites, websites hosting user-generated content, and websites which have not been rated receives different icons. Users can submit websites for review.
NewsGuard was launched in the United States in 2018 and expanded to Europe in 2019. The browser extension is available for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari browsers.
