This course is part of the project Strengthening Journalism in Europe: Tools, Networking, Training, run by the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (CMPF) , Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute in co-operation with the Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) at the Central European University (Budapest). The course can be accessed, for free, after a quick registration process.
Getting familiar with notions and legal standards related to defamation is essential for journalists in order to know and protect their rights, in particular their right to freedom of expression. This course offers an excellent knowledge basis regarding relevant notions, national laws, international and European standards. The course is divided into two parts:
Module 1 – Understanding defamation and national defamation laws
Module 2 – Getting familiar with international and European legal standards on defamation
