online training

The International Press Institute (IPI) and the Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI) have teamed up to produce a video e-learning series reinforcing the effort made with the manual Freedom of Expression, Media Law and Defamation. This e-learning course offers a comprehensive reference and training manual for lawyers and journalists on European legal standards related to freedom of expression and the protection of reputation.

The training is divided into three modules, dealing respectively with:

- Underlying principles and sources of freedom of expression. Module 1 examines definitions, rules and admissible limitations to freedom of expression, referring also to the three part test for assessing the legitimacy of limitations.

- Defamation Cases in Court. Module 2 reviews the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in the area of defamation, highlighting relevant principles set by the court and how these can be enforced in domestic jurisdictions.

- Defamation and the European Court of Human Rights. Module 3 is devoted to the European Convention of Human Rights and the influence it plays in cases of defamation, providing definitions of the notions involved.
