Global Investigative Journalism Network - GIJN - Stakeholders

The Global Investigative Journalism Network is an international association of journalism organizations that support the training and sharing of information among investigative and data journalists, even in repressive regimes and marginalized communities.

Key activities include:

• Providing resources and networking services to investigative journalists worldwide;
• Publishing in multiple languages and on multiple platforms the latest tools, techniques and opportunities for those in the field;
• Helping organize and promote regional and international training conferences and workshops;
• Assisting in the formation and sustainability of journalism organizations involved in investigative reporting and data journalism around the world;
• Supporting and promoting best practices in investigative and data journalism;
• Supporting and promoting efforts to ensure free access to public documents and data worldwide.

Data Justice Lab - Stakeholders

The Data Justice Lab is a space for research and collaboration at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Culture (JOMEC). Its aim is to advance a research agenda that examines the intricate relationship between datafication and social justice, highlighting the politics and impacts of data-driven processes and big data.

Pew Research Center - Stakeholders

The Pew Research Center is a non partisan fact tank based in Washington, D.C. conducting public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis and other empirical social science research in various research areas, including Journalism & Media.

Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network - Stakeholders

Established in 2012, the Internet & Jurisdiction (I&J) Policy Network enables multi-stakeholder cooperation among civil society, academia, technical operators, international organizations, states and internet platforms to address the tension between the cross-border nature of the internet and national jurisdictions facilitating the development of global policy standards. Three thematic programs are currently carried out: Data & Jurisdiction, Content & Jurisdiction, Domains & Jurisdiction. The I&J Observatory keeps track of jurisdictional trends around the world.

Plataforma en Defensa de la Libertad de Información (PDLI) - Stakeholders

Plataforma en Defensa de la Libertad de Información (PDLI) is a Spanish civil society group uniting journalists, lawyers, media houses, social movements and consumer advocates.

PDLI arouse out of the concern of a group of organisations and individuals in the legal field, journalism and social movements after the deterioration of freedom of expression and information in Spain, following a series of reforms and the approval of new laws, such as the Organic Law Project on the Protection of Citizen Security, the Intellectual Property Law, the Transparency Law.

Among the activities PDLI carries out, there is the monitoring and dissemination of attacks on freedom of expression against journalists and the media, as well as against activists, social movements and citizens. PDLI also support campaign in defense of media freedom and organise training programs for journalists, activists and social movements on how to safely exercise their profession.

PDLI launched mapea.cc, an online tool to collect data on legal threats to freedom of expression.

Hermes Center for Transparency and Digital Human Rights - Stakeholders

Hermes Center for Transparency and Digital Human Rights aims at promoting and developing in the society the awareness of and the attention to transparency and accountability. Its aims are:

• supporting and developing free software with the purpose of increasing the Freedom of Speech online and, more in general, the protection of rights and personal freedom in a connected world;
• supporting and developing the whistleblowing free-software solution named “GlobaLeaks” aimed at private and public organizations which shall be free to adopt the same software for their initiatives;
• taking part in associations or organizations which share the same goals as the Hermes Center for Transparency and Digital Human Rights in the field of promotion and protection of civil liberties, anonymity in a connected world, whistleblowing, freedom of speech and investigative journalism;
• supporting the development and promotion of the Tor2web project and of the TOR network and tools thereof in general;
• supporting the development and actual management of the LeakDirectory website, listing whistleblowing websites;
• hosting or attending events aimed at increasing the culture of Transparency (i.e., public-interest whistleblowing, OpenData, OpenGovernment etc.)

Media and Journalism Research Center (MJRC) - Stakeholders

Media and Journalism Research Center (MJRC) is an independent media research and policy think tank that seeks to improve the quality of media policymaking and the state of independent media and journalism through research, knowledge sharing and financial support. MJRC continues the work of the Center for Media, Data & Society (CMDS), which until October 2022 operated as a unit of Central European University (CEU).

Open Data in Europe and Central Asia (ODECA) - Stakeholders

ODECA is a platform to support government representatives, civil society activists, tech activists and citizens that care about and work with open data.

The network covers 18 countries in the region and aims to stimulate innovation, knowledge sharing and learning among practitioners and aficionados of open data regionally and globally.

Their goal is to use the potential of open data to transform societies by empowering citizens and supporting governments to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 

The Internet Monitor - Stakeholders

The Internet Monitor is a research project based at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. Internet Monitor's aim is to evaluate, describe, and summarize the means, mechanisms, and extent of Internet content controls and Internet activity around the world. The project helps researchers, advocates, policymakers, and user communities understand trends in Internet health and activity through research, analysis, and data visualization.

Data & Society is a research institute based in New York City that is focused on the social and cultural issues arising from data-centric technological development. To provide frameworks that can help society address emergent tensions deriving from new technological developments, Data&Society is committed to identifying and researching issues at the intersection of technology and society, providing and encouraging research that can ground informed, evidence-based public debates, and building a network of researchers and practitioners who can anticipate issues and offer insight and direction.
