The Valletta Magistrates Court heard fresh evidence on 1 February 2018 against three men suspected of the murder of Ms. Daphne Caruana Galizia. A group of seven international journalists - including Azerbaijan's award-winning Khadija Ismayilova, Slovenia's Blaz Zgaga and veteran British journalist Richard Norton-Taylor - have joined forces with six trade unions and human rights campaign groups to take the German secret service (BND) to court.
Their joint action at the Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe is based on the updated law known as BNDG-Novelle 2016. The journalists argue that it gives sweeping new powers for BND agents to intercept journalists' communications – even if they are foreign journalists operating outside Germany’s national borders.

#NEWSOCRACY conference sends clear messages, signals new directions and proposes 'persuasive' recommendations

Newspaper Politis has warned of more scrutiny from the authorities regarding its articles on a case of hacked emails which revealed Cypriot prosecutors’ connections to Russia.
The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) recently reported on the case.
Following the Politis stories, Deputy Attorney General Eleni Lοizidou - who was exposed as allegedly having provided advice on extradition cases to Russia - was suspended. Meanwhile, a disciplinary investigation against her was opened.
But Lοizidou has launched a right to privacy lawsuit seeking between half a million to two million euros in damages from Politis.
