Albanian authorities pursue highly problematic media laws despite public outcry

9 December 2019 - Scroll down for the Albanian version -   We, the undersigned organisations, reiterate our call on the Albanian parliament not to approve the draft media laws known as the “defamation package.” Should the draft laws enter into force, they would introduce mandatory registration requirements for online media and create an administrative body with the power to fine, shut down online media and block foreign online media - all without a court order. They would also introduce state regulation of online media, which is contrary to international best practice guidelines on self-regulation.  We note that the proposals are not in…

4 December 2019 The long awaited public inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia will begin this Friday 6 December at the Law Courts in Valletta. For two years, our organisations have supported the family of Daphne Caruana Galizia in calling for an independent, impartial and effective inquiry. Poland: SLAPP defamation lawsuits against Law Professor

ARTICLE 19 and the undersigned organisations call for the governing party in Poland, the Law and Justice party (PiS), and public broadcaster TVP to immediately drop their criminal and civil defamation lawsuits against Professor Wojciech Sadurski, a distinguished constitutional law scholar and public intellectual in Poland. The cases are based on two tweets he sent criticising the ruling party and state broadcaster. These cases constitute SLAPP (Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation) lawsuits as they are brought in bad faith against Sadurski with the aim of clamping down on critical speech by intimidating him, draining his resources (due to the cost…

Joint Statement Malta: political interference into the investigation

Memorial for Daphne in Malta @ECPMF. We, the undersigned organisations, reiterate that the investigation into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia must be independent and impartial. We remind Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat that there must be no political interference in the investigation.  In the last week a number of important, overdue developments have taken place in relation to the investigation into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia including the arrest of Yorgen Fenech, the former head of the Electrogas Malta energy company, as a person of interest in the murder and Melvin Theuma, the suspected middleman.  Since Fenech’s arrest on 20 November,…

Turkey: The re-arrest of Novelist Ahmet Altan is Arbitrary and Cruel

Turkish authorities have re-arrested the internationally-known Turkish novelist Ahmet Altan just one week after his release from over three years in detention. ECPMF and the undersigned organisations said that his re-arrest on 12 November was an extraordinarily low blow in a case that has been marked by political interference and arbitrariness from start to finish. In addition to ongoing violations of his right to freedom of expression, stemming from a prosecution that should never have been brought in the first place, his re-arrest is a form of judicial harassment. Altan should be immediately released and his conviction vacated, the organisations…
