A Hungarian journalist has won a major legal victory and test case with support from the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF).

Illés Szurovecz, a twenty-six year old reporter working for the online news portal abcug.hu, brought the case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) after he was denied entry to the Debrecen refugee camp in eastern Hungary. A Member of Parliament, who accompanied Szurovecz, was allowed in, but he himself was barred.

On International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, twelve partner organisations of the Council of Europe Platform to Promote the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists call on governments to ensure that crimes against journalists are not carried out with impunity.
Earlier this week, the case of courageous Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was moved to the Council of Europe’s category of journalists killed with impunity. The three men charged with her murder have yet to be brought to trial, while those who masterminded her assassination remain at large.

Another Awareness Day reminds the world that reporters and media workers sometimes pay for the truth with their lives.

In the media freedom community, no reminders are required. The struggle for justice continues day by day, and the twelve months since the last United Nations Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists have produced no improvement in the situation.

More than six months after investigative reporter Lyra McKee was murdered, police hunting the killer are offering a range of measures to protect witnesses. In addition a reward of £10,000 (11,500 euros) is on offer for information that leads to a conviction in the case.
